Team Langer wins PNC, denies team Woods in playoff
In a dramatic showdown at the PNC Championship in Orlando, Germany’s Bernhard Langer delivered an unforgettable eagle putt on the first playoff hole to clinch his sixth title at the event, leaving Tiger Woods and his son, Charlie, tantalizingly close to their first victory.
Langer, 67, paired with his son Jason, added this win to his storied legacy, which includes two previous titles with his other son, Stefan. The teams of Woods and Langer both shattered records at the 36-hole family event, posting identical scores of 28-under-par 116 after rounds of 59 on Saturday and 57 on Sunday.
While Langer’s victory was remarkable, the moment of the day belonged to 15-year-old Charlie Woods, who notched his first-ever hole-in-one at the 176-yard par-3 fourth hole.
“It was awesome having Dad there. That was so much fun,” Charlie said of the milestone.
Tiger Woods, a 15-time major champion, shared the joy: “It was an unbelievable moment. We went nuts.”
Despite their stellar play, Team Woods fell short in the playoff at the par-5 18th, where Langer drained a decisive right-to-left eagle putt. “I’ve played with Tiger many times over the years, but today was something special,” Langer said.
For Tiger, the tournament, his first competitive outing since July, was less about results. “This is all about family,” he reflected.
As the sun set on the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, it was Langer’s steady brilliance and Jason’s composure that stood tall, cementing their place in PNC history.
