Tiger Woods tops final PIP rankings

Tiger Woods capped off the PGA Tour’s Player Impact Program (PIP) by finishing first in 2024, his third win in four years. The program, introduced in 2020 to reward players generating the most interest in the sport, concluded this year.

Despite playing just five events in 2024, Woods’ influence remained unmatched. His only made cut came at the Masters, where he finished 60th. Behind the scenes, Woods played a key role in negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF). He also expanded his business portfolio, launching the Sun Day Red brand in early 2024. Additionally, his former agent Hughes Norton published Rainmaker, chronicling Woods’ early career.

Scottie Scheffler, who finished second, had a standout year. He won seven PGA Tour events, the Hero World Challenge, and Olympic gold. His triumphs included The Players Championship and The Masters. Despite a brief arrest outside Valhalla Golf Club during the PGA Championship, Scheffler’s popularity soared. The PGA Tour documented his remarkable season in Scottie 24.

Rory McIlroy, who topped the PIP in 2023, finished third.

The 2024 PIP pool was reduced to $50 million, with Woods earning $10 million. Scheffler received $8 million, while McIlroy took home $4.5 million. Unlike previous years, only the top 10 players were ranked, compared to 20 in 2023.

The PGA Tour has replaced the PIP with the Player Equity Program (PEP), offering $100 million annually in equity grants through 2030. Rewards will be based on three-year and annual performance, alongside criteria similar to the PIP.

As the PIP era closes, Woods’ enduring popularity underscores his legacy as golf’s most magnetic figure.
