Viktor Hovland: Calm, curious, and ready for Delhi challenge

World No. 4 Viktor Hovland arrived in India for the first time this week, bringing his trademark composure and curiosity to the DP World India Championship at Delhi Golf Club. Despite having been in the country for less than 24 hours, the Norwegian star seemed intrigued by the course’s charm and history.

“I’ve only seen five holes so far, but it’s beautiful — the old buildings and ruins around give it a really cool vibe,” he said. “It reminds me a little of Mayakoba, and I’ve had success there, so that’s a good sign.”

A Strategic Week Ahead

Still recovering from a neck injury sustained at the Ryder Cup, Hovland has adjusted his strategy for the week.

“I probably won’t hit many drivers,” he admitted. “The course is tight, and the 3-iron will be my best friend. The fewer big swings I take, the better my neck feels.”

Known for his consistency and iron play, Hovland sees Delhi Golf Club’s narrow fairways and tricky Bermuda rough as an equalizer.

“It’s a precision course. You’ve got to hit fairways and control spin. Everyone will have to adapt, which could play into my strengths.”

Respect for India and Its Golfers

Hovland also spoke about the local field, including Anirban Lahiri and Shubhankar Sharma, both past winners at the venue.

“Home players will feel more comfortable — they know the conditions and the grass. But at the end of the day, golf doesn’t care where you’re from. You’ve still got to hit the shots and make the putts.”

Growing the Game Globally

Impressed by India’s potential, Hovland said he’s proud to be part of an event that could inspire future golfers.

“India’s culture and history fascinate me. If more kids get a chance to play because of events like this, that’s really special.”

Relaxed, thoughtful, and quietly confident, Viktor Hovland is ready to let his game — not his driver — do the talking in Delhi.
