Theegala grinds out 70 in windy conditions to climb into T-39 in Bermuda

Sahith Theegala battled through a gusty third round at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, carding a one-under 70 that nudged him slightly up the leaderboard despite a costly triple bogey.

The Indian-American opened the day at two-under and moved as high as three-under for the round after birdies at the 10th, 14th, 17th and the par-3 third. But a penalty-led triple bogey on the par-4 fourth erased his progress. A late birdie on the par-5 seventh softened the damage, and he finished the day at two-under for the tournament, improving from T-46 to T-39 heading into Sunday.

Theegala, who posted 76-65 over the first two days, continues to search for a strong finish to the PGA TOUR Fall as he aims to climb the FedExCup standings ahead of next week’s RSM Classic, the final stop of the season.

At the top, Adam Schenk fired a bogey-free 67 to share the lead at 12-under 201 with rookie Braden Thornberry, who shot 69. Both entered the week outside the top 100 in the FedExCup—part of a tightly packed group trying to secure full status before the new cutoff takes effect.

One shot back at 11-under sit Canada’s Adam Hadwin (71), Max McGreevy (69), Chandler Phillips (70) and Japan’s Takumi Kanaya (66). Rikuya Hoshino also made a move with a 67 to reach 10-under.

With the wind swirling and the season winding down, Theegala will look for a clean, low round on Sunday to close out his Bermuda week on a high.
