Morikawa edges Scheffler in thriller; Bhatia fades to T6 at Pebble Beach
Akshay Bhatia, the 54-hole leader with a two-shot edge, stumbled Sunday with a 72—managing just two birdies in his final 29 holes—to slip to tied-sixth, three back, at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Sahith Theegala added a 71 for T60.
Swirling winds and pressure remade the board, but Collin Morikawa thrived, firing a 5-under 67 for 22-under 266 and a one-shot win over Sepp Straka and Min Woo Lee—snapping a 28-month drought since his 2023 Zozo Championship.
The two-time major champ birdied three of four closing holes, capped by a masterful 235-yard 4-iron over the ocean wall on 18—after a 20-minute “ice job” wait—two-putting from the collar for the clincher despite a prior 17th bogey.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler charged from eight back with a blistering 63 (three eagles, including a 6-iron to 30 inches on 18), tying for the lead momentarily before settling T4 with Tommy Fleetwood—his 18th straight top-10.
Morikawa’s triumph doubled in joy: he and his wife expect their first child this spring. Bhatia lost the lead by the fourth hole, unable to rally in the chaos.
