Avani fights back with 69 to make cut in Hamburg

Avani Prashanth

India’s Avani Prashanth produced one of the rounds of the day to emerge as the lone Indian to make the cut at the Amundi German Masters in Hamburg.

The 18-year-old fired a superb 4-under 69 — the second-best round of the day — to move to 1-over overall and comfortably make the weekend after the cut fell at 2-over. Avani climbed to tied-47th after battling back from a difficult opening round.

Playing in just her second season on the Ladies European Tour, Avani showed impressive composure and resilience. Her turnaround began with an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole, the same hole where she had made a double bogey in round one.

She continued to build momentum with birdies on the 11th and 13th before a lone bogey on the 14th briefly slowed her charge. Avani responded with another birdie on the 17th to close out an excellent round of 69.

The performance continues a promising season for the Bengaluru golfer, who recorded a tied-fifth finish at the Hero Women’s Indian Open earlier this year.

The other Indians in the field failed to progress to the weekend. Pranavi Urs shot 1-over in the second round to finish at 4-over overall and tied-72nd, while Vani Kapoor had withdrawn after the opening round.

Germany’s Esther Henseleit thrilled the home crowd by taking the halfway lead at 9-under after rounds of 64 and 71.

Czech golfer Sara Kouskova produced the round of the day with a stunning 7-under 64 to move to 8-under and sit one shot behind. Her round featured an eagle after holing out from a bunker on the 11th along with six birdies.

Norway’s Dorthea Forbrigd and German trio Alexandra Försterling, Chiara Noja and Leonie Harm shared third place at 6-under.

A total of 64 players advanced to the weekend rounds at Green Eagle Golf Courses.
