The DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (DP World PGTI) has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of former Indian Open champion Vijay Kumar, who died on April 28, 2026, in his hometown Lucknow following a heart attack. He was 57.
One of the most accomplished figures in Indian professional golf, Vijay Kumar was a four-time Order of Merit winner and the 2002 Indian Open champion — a victory that remains one of the defining moments in Indian golf. He is among a select group of Indian players to have lifted the prestigious title.
Born on September 29, 1968, in Lucknow, Vijay turned professional in 1988 and went on to dominate the domestic circuit through the mid-1990s and early 2000s, building a career marked by consistency, competitiveness and numerous titles.
He also represented India at the 1999 Alfred Dunhill Cup at St Andrews, further underlining his stature in the game.
Widely respected for his skill and sportsmanship, Vijay was equally admired for his humility and personality. His positive attitude and ever-present smile made him a beloved figure across generations of Indian golfers.
Kapil Dev, President of DP World PGTI, paid tribute, saying: “Vijay Kumar ji was one of the true stalwarts of Indian golf. His achievements, humility and commitment to the sport made him a role model for generations. His passing is a great loss to Indian golf, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”
PGTI CEO Amandeep Johl added: “Vijay Kumar was among the finest professionals Indian golf has seen. His 2002 Indian Open win and four Order of Merit titles are part of our sport’s proud history. He contributed immensely to the growth of professional golf in India and will continue to inspire players for years to come.”
Vijay Kumar is survived by his wife and family.
