Fleetwood clinches historic DP World India Championship as Kapur leads home challenge
England’s Tommy Fleetwood produced a brilliant display of control and composure to capture the inaugural DP World India Championship at the Delhi Golf Club, finishing two shots clear of Japan’s Keita Nakajima.
Fleetwood, a DP World ambassador, delighted the massive galleries that packed the fairways, closing with a 7-under 65 to finish at 22-under for the week. His run of four consecutive birdies from the 8th to the 11th holes sealed the title, marking a landmark victory in front of India’s largest-ever crowds for a golf event.
Nakajima, who has enjoyed tremendous success in India with a win and two runner-up finishes in three starts, carded a steady 69 to end at 20-under, while Fleetwood took home the Lotus Trophy and the winner’s cheque of $680,000 from the $4 million purse.
Fleetwood shared an emotional moment on the 18th green as his son Frankie ran onto the green to celebrate — a goal the pair had set before the week began. “It means a lot. I had that moment written down as motivation all week,” Fleetwood said, smiling.
Among the Indians, Shiv Kapur led the charge with a final-round 68 to finish T-32 at 9-under, followed by Dhruv Sheoran (8-under, T-36). Anirban Lahiri and Shubhankar Sharma finished T-56, while Abhinav Lohan was T-63.
Kapur summed up the week: “It was amazing to see such a world-class field on my home course. The fans were incredible — hopefully, this is just the start of something special for Indian golf.”
