IGU puts North East on priority list after 65th AGM
Developing golf in the North East is now a key priority for the Indian Golf Union after its 65th Annual General Meeting in New Delhi. IGU president Brijinder Singh said the union is committed to taking the game to the region and integrating it more fully into mainstream Indian golf.
The AGM at India Habitat Centre drew representatives from 15 State Golf Associations, including Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, reflecting renewed engagement from the North East. The meeting cleared routine business such as adopting the annual report and audited accounts, confirming the minutes of the previous AGM and appointing auditors.
Singh said IGU delegates from the North East, who had long remained on the fringes of national golf activity, are now firmly on board and will receive focused support. He described the North East as an “uncharted territory” for the sport and stressed that the union will work at all levels – grassroots, juniors and high performance – to produce champions from the region.
The “Seven Sisters” – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura – already have several scenic, British-era courses, and IGU plans to leverage these assets. Singh said the union will send coaches and equipment to the region, fund State Golf Associations and also explore the tourism potential of these historic layouts.
Among those attending the AGM were president Brijinder Singh, Honorary Secretary Shashank Sandu, Honorary Treasurer Sanjeev Rattan, Director General Maj Gen (Retd) Bibhuti Bhushan and Governing Council members including North East chairman Nagesh Singh, who joined online. The house observed a minute’s silence in memory of former president Prakash Bhandari.
In the 2024-25 season, IGU staged 32 domestic tournaments and 48 feeder events, and sent Indian teams to 15 international events including the Paris Olympics. The union also hosted its first Level 3 Tournament Administrators & Referees Seminar with The R&A, producing a record pool of 65 Level 3-qualified referees, secured full membership of the Confederation of Professional Golf and conducted the Hero Indian Open with an enhanced purse of 2.5 million dollars.
