Knapp shoots historic 59 at Cognizant Classic
In an electrifying opening round at the Cognizant Classic, Jason Knapp etched his name in the annals of golf history by carding a stunning 12-under 59 at PGA National Resort’s Champion Course. His flawless round featured 12 birdies and six pars, marking just the 15th sub-60 score in PGA TOUR history and the first ever at this storied venue.
Knapp’s round was a masterclass in precision and poise. He ignited his day with five consecutive birdies, turning in 6-under 29. The momentum continued on the back nine, with birdies at 10, 11, 13, and 14, putting him at 10-under through 14 holes. A dramatic 31-foot birdie putt at the par-3 15th — the opening hole of the infamous “Bear Trap” — moved him within one birdie of the coveted 59.
Jake Knapp fired a stunning 12-under 59 in the opening round of the Cognizant Classic, becoming just the 14th player in PGA Tour history to break 60. The all-time Tour record remains with Jim Furyk, who shot a 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship. Before Knapp’s historic round,… pic.twitter.com/e8Cd3ko2f5

With history in sight, Knapp displayed remarkable composure. He made solid pars at 16 and 17 before attacking the par-5 18th. After a perfect drive, he delivered a sensational 6-iron from 200 yards to 19 feet, setting up a two-putt birdie and cementing his place in the record books.
Reflecting on the round, Knapp’s calm demeanor was evident. “I knew I had something special early, but it can go away just as fast,” he said. “After that long putt on 15, I realized it was within reach. But I tried not to think about it too much on 18; just focused on the shot at hand.”
This landmark performance builds on Knapp’s solid history at the venue, where he finished fourth last year. Fresh off a recent victory in Mexico, Knapp now eyes another title, riding a wave of confidence and momentum.
With a place in golf lore secured, Knapp is poised to continue his charge through the weekend, proving once again that he’s more than capable of rising to the occasion.
