Matsuyama sets record with Sentry TOC win

Hideki Matsuyama capped a spectacular week with a final-round 65 (-8) to set a new tournament record of 35-under, surpassing Cameron Smith’s previous mark by one stroke. Matsuyama’s birdie on the 18th sealed the historic milestone and secured his 11th PGA Tour title.

The 2021 Masters champion dazzled with a hole-out eagle on the third and extended his streak of consecutive birdies on the fifth hole to 20. A rare bogey before the turn briefly gave runner-up Collin Morikawa hope, but Matsuyama answered with four birdies over five holes to take full control.

After pars on holes 13 through 15, Matsuyama finished strong with birdies on the 16th and 18th, claiming his third win in 12 months. Reflecting on his performance, he said through a translator: “I knew I had to shoot low today. That last putt felt pivotal, and I’m thrilled it went in.”

Morikawa, who started the day one shot behind, carded a solid 67 (-6) but lamented missed opportunities. “There are shots I wish I could take back,” he admitted. “But I’ll keep putting myself in these positions, and the wins will come.”

Sungjae Im finished third at 29-under, with Jhonattan Vegas in fourth at 25-under. Ludvig Aberg, Thomas Detry and Corey Conners shared fifth at 24-under.
