Sudarshan Yellamaraju produced the best result of his young PGA Tour career, finishing tied fifth at the Players Championship after a strong final-round performance at TPC Sawgrass.
The Indo-Canadian, who learned to swing the club by watching YouTube videos, carded a 4-under 68 on Sunday to reach 9-under for the tournament, securing a place inside the top five. Yellamaraju began the round strongly with three birdies in his first four holes and added another before the turn. On the back nine he mixed two birdies with two bogeys to complete an impressive week.
The 24-year-old’s result lifted him into the top 30 of the FedExCup standings in his debut season on the PGA Tour. He earned his PGA Tour card after graduating from the Korn Ferry Tour (KFT), where he won a title and finished 19th on the KFT rankings.
Akshay Bhatia also finished the week strongly, producing a 2-under 70 in the final round to climb 13 places and finish T-13th at 6-under overall. The recent Arnold Palmer Invitational winner made seven birdies during his round but also conceded three bogeys and a double bogey.
Sahith Theegala, who had shared the lead after the opening round, slipped to tied 32nd after a difficult final-round 77. His round included a double bogey and multiple bogeys before late birdies on the 16th and 17th briefly halted the slide.
Cameron Young claimed the title with a final-round 4-under 68 to finish at 13-under and secure a one-shot victory. The American began the day four shots behind overnight leader Ludvig Åberg but produced a steady round featuring five birdies and one bogey to claim his second PGA Tour title.
Matt Fitzpatrick finished second at 12-under after a 68, while Xander Schauffele took third place at 11-under. Robert MacIntyre finished fourth at 10-under.
Åberg, who had led for two rounds, faltered with a closing 4-over 76 and eventually finished tied fifth alongside Yellamaraju and Jacob Bridgeman. Bridgeman’s result moved him to the top of the FedExCup standings.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler finished T-22nd at 5-under, while Rory McIlroy ended the week T-46th at even par.
