TATA Steel Tour Championship: Veer Ahlawat wins thrilling playoff

Gurugram’s Veer Ahlawat capped an extraordinary 2024 season with a dramatic playoff victory at the TATA Steel Tour Championship in Jamshedpur. The towering 28-year-old, who had already secured the No. 1 spot on the TATA Steel PGTI Order of Merit, fired a sensational seven-under 64 in the final round, tying Amardeep Malik at 17-under 267. Ahlawat clinched the title on the second playoff hole for his fourth professional win.

The INR 3 crore event, played across the Beldih and Golmuri Golf Courses, showcased Ahlawat’s consistent brilliance. His season earnings soared to a record INR 1,56,35,724, breaking the previous mark set in 2023, and making him only the second player in PGTI history to surpass INR 1 crore in a season.

Ahlawat’s two titles and runner-up finish at the Indian Open, a DP World Tour event, earned him a coveted DP World Tour card for 2025. “Winning the PGTI Order of Merit was a major goal, and I’m thrilled. I’m ready to prepare for the challenges of European golf,” Ahlawat said.

Sri Lanka’s N Thangaraja finished third at 16-under, while Yuvraj Sandhu and Udayan Mane tied for fourth at 14-under. Malik’s runner-up effort earned him INR 30 lakh, propelling him to sixth in the rankings. Bengaluru’s Rahil Gangjee secured second on the Order of Merit with INR 69,21,582.
