The R&A set to open doors for LIV golfers at The Open

Scott O’Neil’s tenure as LIV Golf’s CEO has barely begun, but the early returns suggest a seismic shift is underway. Taking the reins from Greg Norman in January, O’Neil has wasted no time in reshaping the league’s narrative, securing LIV’s first major broadcasting deal on both sides of the Atlantic and celebrating the USGA’s landmark decision to provide a direct pathway for LIV players into the U.S. Open.

Now, in what could be another game-changing move, it appears The R&A is set to follow suit.

According to a report from The Telegraph’s James Corrigan, golf’s oldest major will soon offer a clear route for LIV players to qualify for the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush. While neither The R&A nor LIV Golf have officially commented, the implications are undeniable.

For an organization that once distanced itself from LIV—banning Norman from St Andrews during the 150th Open—this marks a notable departure. Throughout golf’s turbulent civil war, The R&A maintained an air of neutrality, but this potential shift suggests a growing acceptance of LIV’s place in the sport.

Could this be the first step toward a lasting reconciliation? Perhaps. And with OWGR status still a thorn in LIV’s side, this development might just be the prelude to an even bigger breakthrough.
