Theegala fights back to make cut at Sony Open
Sahith Theegala rescued his week with a second-round 66 to make the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii, recovering from a three-bogey start in blustery afternoon conditions at Waialae Country Club. The Indian-American moved to 1-under 139 and sits T-59 after rounds of 73–66.
Theegala opened Friday with bogeys on his first three holes and was 3-over through three, but steadied with a scrappy front nine that included four birdies and four bogeys. He then found momentum on the back nine, adding four more birdies and finishing with a key gain at the 18th after a superb third shot from 82 feet to inside three feet.
Indo-Canadian Sudarshan Yellamaraju continued his strong run, backing up an opening 67 with another 67 to reach 6-under and T-14 heading into the weekend. Indo-British Aaron Rai also advanced, posting 69–70 to join Theegala at 1-under and T-59. In all, 74 players at 1-under 139 made the cut for the final two rounds.
Steady winds played a major role in scoring, but Davis Riley (67–64) climbed to 9-under to share the halfway lead with defending champion Nick Taylor (62–69), Kevin Roy (62–69), S.H. Kim (63–68) and Adrien Dumont de Chassart (64–67). A group at 8-under — including Maverick McNealy, Takumi Kanaya, John Parry and Chris Gotterup — sit one back.
Jordan Spieth reached 3-under with a 69, while 62-year-old Vijay Singh made the cut in his 25th Sony Open start with rounds of 68–70. Among the notable names to miss the weekend were Keegan Bradley, Collin Morikawa, Chris Kirk, Keita Nakajima and Tony Finau.
