Theegala finds form with top-10 as Scheffler cruises at The American Express
Sahith Theegala signed off a confidence-boosting week with a bogey-free 7-under 65 to record his first top-10 finish in over a year, while World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler delivered another emphatic statement with a four-shot victory at The American Express.
Theegala’s closing round lifted him to a tie for eighth at 21-under, marking his first PGA TOUR top-10 since the 2024 Tour Championship. The Indian-origin American’s result came after a slow start, having opened with a 1-under 71 that left him tied 118th. He responded with rounds of 64, 67 and 65, including two bogey-free efforts, to surge up the leaderboard.
On Sunday, Theegala stayed in complete control, picking up three birdies on the front nine and four more on the back, closing with birdies on two of his final three holes. While he finished six shots behind the winner, the week signalled a timely return to form after an injury-disrupted 2025 season.
At the top, Scheffler was relentless. Beginning the final round two shots off the lead, he fired a 6-under 66, highlighted by a decisive run of four birdies in six holes on the front nine, to pull clear of the field at 27-under. Even an early bogey and a late double failed to halt his charge.
The win was Scheffler’s 20th PGA TOUR title — all achieved within four years — earning him lifetime membership and placing him alongside Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to reach 20 wins and four majors before turning 30.
Akshay Bhatia and Sudarshan Yellamaraju missed the cut.
